8 of The Best Mold Preventers

baking-sodaNo one likes mold. Not only is it a health hazard that you don’t want in your home or business, but it also doesn’t look great, particularly if you’re trying to rent or sell your home, have visitors coming over, or if you are running a business.

No matter where you are in the world, mold is a common problem, and over the centuries there have been many natural and chemical based products that have an effect on mold to keep it away. These days, there are plenty of simple solutions that you can try yourself to get rid of, and to prevent, mold.

Here are some of the best ways that have been tried, tested and successful.  

Baking Soda

  1. Add 1/4 tablespoon of baking soda into a spray bottle of water.
  2. Shake the bottle until the baking soda is dissolved.
  3. Spray the moldy area with the baking soda and water solution.
  4. Use a scrubbing brush to remove the mold.
  5. Rinse and dry the surface to remove any residual mold.

Tea Tree Oil

  1. Add 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil per cup of water into a spray bottle.
  2. Spray the solution on the surface.
  3. Leave the tea tree oil on the surface to prevent it from coming back.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

  1. Create a solution of grapefruit seed extract and water in a spray bottle – 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract per cup of water.
  2. Shake the solution and spray it onto mold.
  3. You do not need to rinse, because the grapefruit seed extract will prevent mold from reappearing.

Vinegar

  1. Pour vinegar (white or any other kind) into a spray bottle and apply anywhere mold and mildew are growing.
  2. Let it sit for a few minutes to kill and dissolve the fungus
  3. Wipe away with a cloth or sponge.

Bleach

  1. Use a ratio of one cup of bleach per gallon of water (about 1 : 10 ratio)
  2. Apply the solution to by using a spray bottle or bucket and a sponge.

Ammonia

  1. Create a solution of 50% “clear ammonia” and 50% water in a spray bottle and spray directly onto mold.
  2. Leave the area for a few hours then wipe and rinse.

Hydrogen Peroxide 3%

  1. Pour 3% concentration hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle.
  2. Spray the mold until saturated with hydrogen peroxide and leave it for 10 minutes.
  3. Scrub the area to make sure to remove the mold and stains.
  4. Wipe the surface down.

Distilled Ethanol (Cheap Vodka)

  1. Pour Vodka (the cheaper the better – less filtering means a stronger mold fighter) into a spray bottle and apply anywhere mold and mildew are growing.
  2. Let it sit for a few minutes to kill and dissolve the fungus
  3. Wipe away with a cloth or sponge.
